Oman's unique story contains elements of great moral strength, courage, heroism, maritime skills, scholarship and hard work that have together moulded the country into its present form. By drawing our attention to the noble efforts of distinguished Omanis, the historians who have compiled this book remind us of the impressive achievements of Oman's forbears and provide us with a deeper understanding of the great wealth of human experience that is at the foundation of modem Oman.
Oman in History is the culmination of a major effort to provide the first ever chronological account, based on modem research methods, of Oman's past. Extensive studies were undertaken by a number of renowned Arab scholars and reviewed by a special committee, followed by discussions at a four-day symposium convened for this purpose at Sultan Qaboos University in September 1994. This meeting was attended by academicians from institutions throughout the Arab world.
The text is subdivided into five parts, each of which is arranged into chapters dealing with particular aspects of Oman's historical heritage.
