Books we love too much. Draw your own conclusions about the year's zeitgeist from BookFinder.com's list of 2006's most sought-after out- of-print books: 1) 'Sex' (1992) by Madonna; the pop icon's thoughts on the subject, in words and pictures. 2) 'Football Scouting Methods' (1963) by Steve Belichick. 3) 'Touch Me Again' (1978) by Suzanne Somers; poetry. 4) 'Man in Black: His Own Story in His Own Words' (1975) by Johnny Cash. 5) 'Treasury of Great Recipes' (1965) by Mary and Vincent Price. 6) 'The Principles of Knitting' (1988) by June Hemmons Hiatt. 7) 'The Lion's Paw' (1946) by Rob White; children's adventure story. 8) 'The Secret of Perfect Living' (1963) by James Mangan; self-help. 9) 'Once a Runner: A Novel' (1978) by John L. If you got a bookstore gift certificate for Christmas, use it on Leigh Montville's 'The Big Bam,' or 'Moving the Chains' by Charles P. Pierce. Holiday travel enabled this reader to finally inhale these literary keepers...Speaking of books, 'Football Scouting Methods,' written by the late Steve Belichick in 1963, ranked second among the top 10 most-sought-after out-of-print books, according to Abebooks's BookFinder.com. And one final book note. Make sure to avoid the latest and hopefully last Regan Books entry, a 'biographical novel' of Mickey Mantle's private (read: sex) life by the shameless Peter Golenbock. The author blends fact with fiction and gives it to us in the defenseless voice of the late, great Mantle.

From the outside-the-football-hash-marks department, we pass along the following nugget: BookFinder.com, which touts itself as a search engine that searches over 100 million books for sale (including those out of print), has released its list of Top 10 sought-after out-of-print books for 2006. The results, detailed here, have a Patriots twist. Steve Belichick's 1963 book 'Football Scouting Methods' ranked second, trailing only Madonna's 1992 book 'Sex'. In third place was Suzanne Somers' 1976 book 'Touch Me Again'. After donating his family's book collection to the Naval Academy earlier this year, Bill Belichick told The Capital that 'Football Scouting Methods' was probably his favorite football book. Apparently, he's not alone.

The Book Standard, BookFinder.com releases Top 10 Out-of-Print Books of 2006
(December 19, 2006)
BookFinder.com, a website that facilitates searches for and purchases of used, rare and out-of-print books, has announced the Top 10 most sought-after out-of-print books on the website in 2006. Madonna tops the list with her 1992 book, Sex, as she has every year since BookFinder.com began releasing its annual list in 2003. Sex isn't the only book to make a repeat appearance. The Principles of Knitting, by June Hemmons Hiatt, is at No. 6 this year, down from No. 5 in 2005. Robb White's The Lion's Paw moved up to No. 7 in 2006, from No. 8 last year. 'America spent 2006 cooking with Rachael Ray, sharing home videos on YouTube, customizing USPS stamps, writing on blogs, and reading magazines like ReadyMade,' said Anirvan Chatterjee, founder of BookFinder.com. 'Out-of-print books are not marketed by publishers; readers are seeking these books out on their own.' While Madonna may constantly have a hold on popular out-of-print books, a movie can also boost the popularity of a book. Johnny Cash's Man in Black: His Own Story in His Own Words, which was the source for the Joaquin Phoenix-starring film Walk the Line, is at No. 4.

In researching Abebooks, I found more than a dozen copies of Hilton's 'Senora Sketch Book' offered for sale with prices ranging from $19 to $50. Several were signed by the author. It is safe to conclude the book is common. My research also revealed there was a second printing of the first edition and a reprint done by Best West Publications in 1966. Value rests with the first edition, first printing.

They wanted $1 for it, which I thought was a bargain [Bulletin Board interjects: You thought it was a bargain? Now entering Corn Dog Corner is ? Bulletin Board!], so I snapped it right up. Americana Exchange Monthly, BookFinder Tallies the Top Ten Old Books
(October 2006)
BookFinder.com has issued its annual survey of the most popular out- of-print books, and their top ten lists are as amusing as they are surprising. BookFinder.com has an incisive look at the most popular old books as they operate a search engine for finding out-of-print books on the internet. They know precisely which books people are looking to find. Actually, BookFinder.com has given us ten top ten lists, something it would take David Letterman two weeks to accomplish. They are broken down by subject. Heading up the top ten biographies is a biography that was recently a movie. That, along with the great admiration the man has earned, makes the Man in Black, a biography of Johnny Cash, number one. Number two, however, surprises me: Forty-Seven Years in the Universalist Ministry by Daniel Bragg Clayton. I don't know the book, but it's a surprising subject for such success. Other subjects of top ten biographies include Charlie Russell (western artist), Marilyn (last name not necessary), and a Mafia hit man. Number 8 is My 60 Memorable Games by Bobby Fischer, the chess genius and repulsive human who talks like Mel Gibson drunk when he's sober. Most of the most sought after books change from year to year, bur riding atop the Arts and Music category for the fifth straight year is...are you ready for this?...Sex by Madonna. I doubt that this has much to do with either art or music, and probably not a lot to do with sex either, but Madonna is Madonna, which is better than having the top art book be something by Paris Hilton.

As we celebrate Banned Books Week and the struggles that won us our right to read relatively freely, we should keep in mind that we can win real freedom to read by not only working to challenge censorship...but also addressing issues like illiteracy rates, embattled library budgets, changes in attitudes toward print culture, the rising cost of books, barriers associated with copyright law, etc. As a community of bibliophiles, we have work to do.'

'Moving into Europe is a natural progression,' said CEO Chatterjee. 'We've always had an international approach, helping Americans buy books in four languages, from booksellers in over 50 countries. The development of JustBooks builds on that commitment, as we customize our innovative book search technologies to better serve the specific needs of book lovers.' In November 2005, Abebooks.com, an online book marketplace, purchased BookFinder.com, but BookFinder.com continues to run independently. JustBooks users can use the site to find new, used and out-of-print books by searching through more than 100 million books from more than 100,000 booksellers. Prices will be in local currencies, and will include the cost of shipping in the display price. Chatterjee said the company is 'looking forward to offering our European users the easiest way to find and buy books from local and international booksellers.'

The Wall Street Journal, Books: Out of Print. Sylvia Plath's bedtime story. Lynne Cheney's novel. A look at the year's top used books.
(September 9, 2006)
When readers want to see how new books are selling, they check the bestseller lists or the rankings on Web sites like Amazon. But a new set of rankings has just come out for another segment of the market: books that are out of print. Last week, BookFinder.com, a site that lets shoppers search the inventories of about 100,000 booksellers for new and used books, released a list of the out-of-print books that were most searched-for on its site in the past year. Though these books weren't necessarily the top sellers, the report offers a look at what titles are generating interest. Below, three of the most searched-for out-of-print titles in the past year, according to the site's rankings. The Bed Book, Sylvia Plath (1976). One of the top out-of-print children's books has an unexpected author -- the poet Sylvia Plath, who wrote this book-length poem for youngsters. The work describes a series of magical beds, including one that grows when it's watered and another that can be used as a submarine. Sisters, Lynne Cheney (1981). The single most sought-after work of fiction on BookFinder.com this year was written by the vice president's wife. The novel, a romance set in the American frontier that had limited sales at the time of its release, currently commands prices as high as $720 at used-book sellers in BookFinder.com's network. Voices of Moccasin Creek, Tate Cromwell Page (1972). This extremely rare work chronicles the journey of Mr. Page's ancestors from Mississippi to Pope County, Ark., in the Ozark National Forest. The founder and CEO of BookFinder.com, Anirvan Chatterjee, says that books tied to a particular area can develop a strong regional following.

PW Daily, Out of Print But Still In Demand
(August 31, 2006)
Just because a title has been entrusted to the publishing dust bin, or in industry terms 'fallen out of print,' doesn't mean readers don't still want to get their hands on it. BookFinder.com, which sells out-of-print titles (along with new and used ones), has listed some of the unavailable books which readers still want to buy, or at least occasionally go hunting for. In its annual survey tracking the most highly sought after out-of-print titles in the last year--the survey relied on data compiled from searches made on BookFinder.com from July 2005 through June 2006--the most notable titles were from celebrities or were lesser known books by famous writers. Books falling into this category include Sex by Madonna, Man in Black by Johnny Cash, Marilyn a Biography by Norman Mailer and The Bed Book by Sylvia Plath. The full report, which can be found at http://report.bookfinder.com, includes 100 titles in all in 10 different categories.

7 On Your Side, ABC-7 (San Francisco), Keeping Textbook Costs Down
(August 22, 2006)
With colleges and universities back in session, students and their parents are feeling the sting of ever-rising textbook prices -- but there are ways to keep costs to a minimum. As if tuition and housing aren't enough to worry about, books now cost the average student roughly $1,000 per year. But you can cut costs by knowing where and how to get what you need...'There's a lot of reasons for buying new, new will last a long time, and you can resell them later on and they'll be in better condition,' says Anirvan Chatterjee, founder and CEO of BookFinder.com. 'But if you're trying to save money, buy used. There's no reason not to.' Just be sure to factor-in shipping costs. Some aggregate Web sites like Berkeley-based BookFinder.com, which searches over 100,000 booksellers Web sites, will do the math for you. 'You don't have to keep going from Web site to Web site to Web site to find the best deals,' Chatterjee explains. 'It'll also look at the cost of shipping and let you compare apples to apples.'

NBC-10 (Philadelphia), You Can Save Money On Textbooks: Online Sites, Used Book Stores Offer Bargains
(August 17, 2006)
With the fall semester right around the corner, college bookstores are bracing for the rush and many parents are bracing for the crunch on their wallets. NBC 10 consumer reporter Tracy Davidson has some ways to save on textbooks. Prices on textbooks have more than tripled since 1986 and some estimates say students spend an average of $900 a year on textbooks. But there are ways to save...Davidson does have a couple of reminders. Used books can always save you, unless a new edition is required in your class, so check if you are not sure. If you are buying used, don't procrastinate because they go fast. If you are ordering online, check the shipping costs when comparing prices. Whether you are searching online or in-person, use the book's ISBN number, which you can get from your professor or the bookstore, so you know you're getting the right book. (August 10, 2006)
For college students shopping for school this year, it's all about saving -- whether it's textbooks, electronics or outfitting the dorm room. Consumers 'are looking for more bargains,' said Michael P. Niemira, chief economist for the International Council of Shopping Centers. A council survey found that 54 percent of consumers were focusing on price for back-to-school expenditures this year. Retailers have been busy keeping up with demand, as evidenced by the industry's healthy increase in July sales. BookFinder.com is a Berkeley-based search engine for new and used books. Its founder and chief executive officer, Anirvan Chatterjee, said the costliness of textbooks these days has made BookFinder.com, which links to 100,000 booksellers, an extremely busy site between August and September. In the first week of August, BookFinder.com enjoyed 22 percent growth in average sales over the same period last year, Chatterjee reported.
Internet Retailer, Book E-marketplace Does Away With 'Plus Shipping and Handling'
(August 1, 2006)
After reading a recent economics paper from the University of California at Berkeley's Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley graduate and BookFinder.com founder Anirvan Chatterjee, based on the research in the paper, decided to make an across-the-board change to his e-commerce site. Rather than listing only the price of products, the site now lists the total price of products with shipping and handling charges figured in. The change has led to a general if slight increase in conversion rates, Chatterjee tells Internet Retailer...The early data indicates varied impacts across different retailers on BookFinder.com. 'One mid-sized retailer on our platform saw incoming customer clicks decline by 25% but sales jump by 50%. Another retailer, one with atypically high shipping rates, saw conversion increase by 50% but overall sales decline by a third,' Chatterjee reports. 'In general, conversion rates have been slightly higher; we've found that having better data upfront means customers are less indecisive. And increased transparency definitely favors retailers with shipping costs in line with industry averages.' The company made the change in part because of what it sees as a larger e-commerce industry move to reconsider the role of shipping prices. In June, for example, eBay announced it would start cracking down on sellers who charge excessive shipping prices.
Information Today NewsLink, Cool Sites for Book Lovers
(August 2006)
BookFinder.com is a Web site that allows customers to search an inventory of more than 100 million books for sale from booksellers in more than 50 countries. It claims to provide the world's largest searchable book inventory. (It's nice to know there's more than just Amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com out there.) BookFinder.com recently announced a revamped pricing structure that presents book shoppers with a single price figure, combining the book's price plus shipping and handling. It is designed to make it easy for customers to compare the real cost of a book from multiple suppliers. Here's the rationale, according to founder Anirvan Chatterjee: 'We've noticed significant changes in the pricing landscape in the used and rare book markets. On one hand, we're seeing a flood of very cheap titles, often less than $0.25, where the seller makes the profit from the shipping charges. On the other hand, we're also seeing increasingly price-competitive international bookselling, where it can be cheaper to buy a book from another country, in spite of the relatively larger shipping cost. Bundling shipping prices can make clear the real cost of a $0.01 book, while making it a little less scary for a Californian considering buying a title from London.'
Americana Exchange Monthly, Truth in Pricing: BookFinder Attempts to Display What Books Really Cost
(August 2006)
Congratulations are in order to the multi-site book search engine BookFinder.com for attempting to present real prices, that is, ones that include shipping costs. This is an imperfect process, and not of great importance if you buy a Gutenberg Bible where shipping will be an insignificant part of the cost. However, if you are purchasing used books, perhaps just a few dollars in cost, or maybe even a penny, shipping is a major part of the price. BookFinder.com has recognized that a one-cent book with a $10 shipping cost is no bargain compared to a $3 book with $2 in shipping. A little truth in pricing should be most helpful for those looking to find the actual lowest price rather than the imaginary one.
The New York Times, Backlist to the Future
(July 30, 2006)
'The mass market is turning into a mass of niches,' Chris Anderson writes in The Long Tail, his best-selling new book on the economics of entertainment. A handful of blockbusters may dominate at the multiplex and the megastore, he argues, but there's untapped potential in the vast number of books, movies and recordings that sell relatively few copies -- the so-called 'long tail' of the sales curve -- potential that can now be tapped through online retailers...Paradoxically, the online sales technologies on which the long tail depends may actually be undercutting backlist sales by squeezing them between the two poles of the market: new frontlist titles and used books, which are easier to find than ever thanks to the rise of online booksellers and search engines like BookFinder.com.
AuctionBytes, BookFinder.com Makes Comparison Shopping More Transparent
(July 26, 2006)
The vertical comparison-shopping site BookFinder.com used a recent economics paper to guide its decision in how to display books using its service. BookFinder.com will now display all prices as postpaid, with the cost of shipping and handling built-in. By comparing total prices, rather than base prices, BookFinder.com says its comparison search engine can save book-buyers up to 45 percent. An academic paper from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business called '...Plus Shipping and Handling,' written by economists John Morgan and Tanjim Hossain, describes an experiment the authors ran on eBay: customers spent 21% more on CDs with a $.01 starting price and $3.99 shipping, vs. identical CDs with a $4.00 starting price and free shipping. The authors also explored why buyers were unconsciously biased toward the $0.01+$3.99 products rather than the 'revenue equivalent' $4.00+$0.00 items. BookFinder.com's founder Anirvan Chatterjee said, 'We've noticed significant changes in the pricing landscape in the used and rare book markets. Bundling shipping prices.' BookFinder.com's revamped pricing structure, presents book shoppers with a single price figure, combining the book's price plus shipping and handling. The website allows customers to search an inventory of over 100 million books for sale, from booksellers in over 50 countries. Shipping estimates are available for residents of over 240 countries and territories.

They are what motivated him to build BookFinder.com, an open online marketplace for books...'When I came to Berkeley as a student I fell in love with the bookstores in Berkeley. I discovered that I could buy out-of-print books and used books in nearby bookstores. But the more I saw the more I wanted to buy these books and the more I found that I couldn't really find everything I wanted nearby. As I went online I would find these little online bookshops that would sell the books that I couldn't find at local bookstores. It took me a long time to find each book that I was looking for.'
The Chicago Tribune, Publishing house breathes new life into 'Cherry Ames'
(April 8, 2006)
I started the quest at BookFinder.com, a comprehensive search site with a database of more than 100 million new and used books for sale from inventories around the world. BookFinder.com informed me, for instance, that 213 used copies of 'Cherry Ames, Army Nurse' were available at prices ranging from $4.50 ('rubbing on edges, text is unmarked') to $90 (for a first-edition hardcover).
The New York Times, Cherry Ames, My Daughter Will See You Now
(April 6, 2006)
I would need to reassemble the collection of the 27 books. Since most have long been out of print (Springer Publishing last fall released a boxed set of the first four in the series and plans to republish Nos. 5 through 8 this year), the obvious solution was to hunt for used copies online. I started the quest at BookFinder.com, a comprehensive search site with a database of more than 100 million new and used books for sale from inventories around the world. (March 30, 2006)
Whoever left the Antioch College library in 1956 with a copy of The Disappearing City, a little-known book by Frank Lloyd Wright, didn't have a very good sense of financial investment. Recorded as 'missing' from the college library that year, the book made its way back to the library's stacks this week in decent shape and worth a whole lot more than it was when it was taken...According to Sanders' research on BookFinder.com, The Disappearing City was worth anywhere from $300 for an unsigned copy to $1,700 for a signed copy.

Law librarian Rick Ramponi's collection of 3,000 regional cookbooks -- including 'Talk About Good' from the Lafayette, La., Junior League and 'Shalom on the Range,' which celebrates Southwestern Jewish cuisine -- was manageable while he lived in a large house here. But when he moved to a one-bedroom apartment with a partner who collects large art and architecture books, Ramponi had to exile those cherished culinary texts to a pair of rented storage units several blocks away...To determine value, check prices on Alibris, BookFinder.com or Amazon.

The Washington Post, Where to Share Your Book Bounty
(March 23, 2006)
For serious readers, throwing books away is unthinkable. But selling them or donating them to a good cause can soften the pain of parting. Libraries or schools often are happy to take books in good condition, usually to sell them to raise money for their own programs. Call before you schlep. You can hawk books on the Internet, although that involves packing and shipping; unless they're valuable, it might be easier to unload them at a yard sale. Used-book stores are an option, though typically they pay just a fraction of list price (as little as 5 percent) or only issue credit. If all else fails, set up a giveaway table in your office or apartment building for sharing. To determine value, check prices on Alibris, BookFinder.com or Amazon.

The Morning Call (Allentown, PA), Do Detective Work Before Selling Your Hardy Boy books
(January 27, 2006)
The market is heavily flooded with Hardy Boy books. Just check www.ebay.com, www.abebooks.com, or BookFinder.com. My recommendation is that you sell your collection as a collection. If your collection is typical, the bulk of its value most likely rests in a few titles. If you allow a buyer to 'cherry pick' the collection, the value of the remaining titles in the collection diminishes.
Village Weekly (Ireland), Book Notes
(January 26, 2006)
BookFinder.com run an annual chart of books which people have searched for without success, most of which can be categorised under 'Books you'd Never Read'. The top ten is headed by Madonna's high art and badly dressed Sex, surely confirmation to all parents who believed that the internet is full of middle aged men searching for porn. Other entries prove more comprehensible. Lynne Cheney's Sisters is at No 2 as people try to read the US Vice-President's wife's lesbian romance novel from 1982. At No 6 is John Kerry's The New Soldier, the 1971 experiences in the Vietnam War by the 2004 Democratic Presidential hopeful. Oddly, the fourth most searched for book last year was The Principles of Knitting, written in 1988 by June Hiatt. Does it contain the secrets of Fatima amid its plain and purl instructions? We're not sure why and think it might be better not to know.

Bargain Books News, BookFinder.com Lists Top 10 Out-Of-Print Books For 2005
(January 10, 2006)
BookFinder.com, a website that facilitates searches for and purchases of used, rare and out-of-print books, has announced its list of the top 10 most-sought-after out-of-print books for 2005. The top 10 are: 1 'Sex' (1992), Madonna; 2 'Sisters' (1981), Lynne Cheney; 3 'The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel' (1981), Felicitas D. Goodman; 4 'Where Troy Once Stood,' (1991), Iman Wilkens; 5 'The Principles of Knitting,' (1988), June Hemmons Hiatt; 6 'General Printing' (1963), Glen Cleeton; 7 'The New Soldier' (1971), edited by John Kerry; 8 'The Lion's Paw' (1946), Robb White; 9 'Dear and Glorious Physician' (1959), Taylor Caldwell; 10 'The Book of Counted Sorrows (2003), Dean Koontz.
The Palm Beach Post, 'Sisters': Out Of Print But Still On Our Mind
(January 8, 2006)
You'll undoubtedly be thrilled to know that among the most-requested out-of-print titles at BookFinder.com are Lynne Cheney's lesbian frontier romance Sisters, Barry Goldwater's Conscience of a Conservative, and Mark Felt's The FBI Pyramid From the Inside. BookFinder.com breaks down their most-requested titles into categories. Other in-demand books include Ralph Nader's Unsafe at Any Speed, Felix Salten's Bambi's Children and Ricky Jay's Cards as Weapons. Fiction is a whole different ball game; included are several novels by Taylor Caldwell (Dear and Glorious Physician, etc.), Sinclair Lewis' Cass Timberlane, Hervey Allen's Anthony Adverse, A.J. Cronin's The Green Years and Zane Grey's The Vanishing American -- all strongly suggesting that old films featured on Turner Classic Movies drive curiosity about novels that formed their story basis.
The Georgia Straight (Vancouver) (Canada), This year I'll definitely spend less time on-line
(January 5, 2006)
Web sites? I've got a few. First, unless you get a time machine and hop back to 1996, you won't be too impressed with the Web site design over at BookFinder.com. It's a great place to find rare and out-of-print books and has a central search engine that boasts access to 100 million tomes listed by 100,000-plus booksellers (skewed toward the rare and out-of-print stuff), but it's not very stylish. It actually cheers me up to see it, partly because it lets visitors get right down to the business of searching for a particular book and partly because I look at that page and think--as a person who was rejected from the art world back in Grade 3--'Wow. Compared to that, I feel like Leonardo de Monet!' (I was also booted out of art-history class.) BookFinder.com has been open since 1996; perhaps the executives decided that updating the database engine driving things behind the scenes was a bigger priority than adding spinning graphics, Javascript doohickeys, Flashy animations, or, I don't know, a sixth colour. Score one for efficiency over aesthetics.

Whether looking forward or remembering backward, nothing tops a Top 10. The lists proliferate as one year fades into another. Some Top 10s get lots of attention, such as news roundups of the biggest stories of the previous 12 months...Top 10 out-of-print books of 2005: 1. 'Sex' (1992) by Madonna; 2. 'Sisters' (1981) by Lynne Cheney; 3. 'The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel' (1981) by Felicitas D. Goodman; 4. 'Where Troy Once Stood' (1991) by Iman Wilkens; 5. A: All books made the top 10, but Madonna's book was most requested.

Finally, now that it is possible to find copies of virtually any book, in or out of print, through one of the online sources (addall.com, BookFinder.com and others), I encourage readers to track down Ira Glackens's 'Yankee Diva,' an unrelentingly lively biography of the American soprano Lillian Nordica; soprano Frances Alda's 'Men, Women and Tenors' (the great gossipy prima donna memoir); Hector Berlioz's 'Memoirs,' which is not only autobiography but literature in itself; Louis Moreau Gottschalk's 'Notes of a Pianist,' a mid-19th-century tour of the tropics by a gifted and original American artist; and 'The Diary of George Templeton Strong.'
